Each quarter, we celebrate the participants who recently completed the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program. As a modular program, individuals graduate on their own timelines, and this quarter we’re celebrating one of our earliest registrants, Kevin Gott (Computer Systems Engineer at NERSC) alongside longtime CSCCE collaborator Maria Doyle (Community Manager for Bioconductor).

Kevin’s journey through the program
In 2023, we launched the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program with an initial cohort of 13 STEM community managers. Kevin Gott was part of that original cohort, which he joined alongside soon-to-be-grads at NERSC, Rebecca Hartman-Baker and Lipi Gupta. As part of the pilot cohort, Kevin and colleagues were instrumental in providing feedback on our new training courses and Mini-workshops, as well as letting us know how our then relatively new learning management system, Canvas, was helping support them as they progressed. Kevin’s course and Mini-workshop selections aligned around project management, and supported his work as community manager for the NERSC community of practice – a complex “community of communities” that connects core users of the facility from a range of disciplinary backgrounds. Kevin capped off his time in the program with a Quarterly Skills Share session lightning talk on network graphs, generously sharing his approach to managing and understanding large, complex communities of practice.
About his time in the program, Kevin said:
“There’s no other program discussing [the] challenges [of community management] like this. Provides a strong framework to converse around, making it a bridge to success across the larger community.”

Maria’s journey through the program
Maria Doyle joined the program the year after Kevin, in our second cohort (please note: we now accept enrollment in the CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program on a rolling basis, although all training courses offered within the program remain cohort-based learning environments). Having completed her core training courses, Content Design (CODE) and Creating Community Playbooks (PBK), Maria chose Nurturing Online Communities (NOC) as her elective course, and various Mini-workshops to inform her work convening a large, international community online. We look forward to continuing to work with Maria as part of our current collaboration with Bioconductor where we’re building out a new champions program (find out more about how CSCCE partners with other organizations on their community engagement work). About her time in the program, Maria said:

We celebrate graduates from the program in multiple ways! Everyone who successfully completes the program:
- Receives a digital badge recognizing their achievement
- Receives a digital certificate that they can print and display
- Receives an enamel pin and personalized postcard in the mail
- Is featured on this page on the CSCCE website
- Is featured at the next Quarterly Skills Share session (for this quarter’s grads, that will take place on Wednesday, 2 September)
