In this five-part series, intended for teams or groups of related projects, you will explore the CSCCE Community Participation Model in three parts – supporting you with describing who your project is intended to engage, the different modes of engagement that may be present, and how to support ongoing engagement in a sustainable way. We’ll additionally cover themes such as how to lower barriers to engagement by creating scaffolding, and how people who are engaging with a project might move between different modes of engagement.
This is an interactive and highly practical training, equipping participants with frameworks and tactics that they can apply immediately, as well as providing opportunities to learn about each other’s work.
This training is currently only available as a private cohort. Intended audiences include:
- Program managers from the same organization or related organizations managing community-engaged projects
- Participants in a champions or ambassador program working to launch community-engaged projects
- Grantees working on similar community-engaged projects

Course overview
During this interactive training course, we will work through concepts and frameworks from the three CSCCE Community Participation Model guidebooks. Three instructor-led sessions alternate with two learner-driven office hours, at which you can ask questions, share your experiences, and explore cohort-specific emerging themes.
Following each of the live sessions, there will be short homework assignments such as completing materials started in class or pre-reading for the following class. These should take 30 – 60 minutes to complete – especially if you are engaged during the live sessions.
Course syllabus and overview
Part 1: Who is your community-engaged project intended to engage? Considering purpose, belonging, culture and power (2 hours)
In this first session of our series, we discuss what we mean by a community-engaged project and how community-engaged activities relate to purpose, belonging, culture, and power.
Office hours 1 (1 hour)
This office hours session is an opportunity to bring any questions that you have about the materials covered in the previous session – which could include reviewing homework, asking questions about pre-reading, or extending the concepts to specific projects that you’re working on now or planning in the future. You’ll actively shape what we discuss during these sessions and we encourage and welcome your input!
Part 2: Considering pathways to engagement and lowering barriers to participation (2 hours)
In the second session focused on community engagement, we’ll be exploring how to describe the expected participation of members in our community-engaged projects using CSCCE’s Community Participation Model. We’ll consider the potential barriers to participation in each of the four modes of the model, as well as the role of scaffolding in lowering barriers to participation and supporting movement across the modes.

This office hours session is an opportunity to bring any questions that you have about the materials covered in the previous session – which could include reviewing homework, asking questions about pre-reading, or extending the concepts to specific projects that you’re working on now or planning in the future. You’ll actively shape what we discuss during these sessions and we encourage and welcome your input!
Part 3 and series wrap-up: The role of community champions in supporting scaling and sustainability (2 hours)
In the third session focused on community engagement, we’ll consider the fifth, meta-mode of engagement – champion. We’ll explore the three different functions of community champions and consider whether there are already champions in our community-engaged projects. We’ll also conclude the series with a recap and final activity.

Training format and learning tools
Synchronous CSCCE training sessions take place primarily in Zoom, with various activities during live sessions taking place in Google Workspace. Due to the interactive nature of CSCCE trainings, we encourage you to join us in Zoom from a desktop computer or laptop, ideally with your camera on. You’ll need to be able to access this shared notes doc during the session and participate in conversations in the main room as well as in breakouts.
