Expanded professional development opportunities with CSCCE: Certification and new courses!

Earlier this year, we announced that 2023 would see additional training opportunities from CSCCE. We’re now ready to share more details about our new Community Manager Certification Program so you can reserve your place in the first cohorts of learners!

2023 will see two pilot cohorts of up to 25 community managers start their certification journey with us. This is an exciting opportunity to help us shape the program as we continue to develop and deliver best-in-class professional development to community managers across the STEM ecosystem. Over the course of up to two years, participants in the program will take three multi-week courses, six 90-minute mini-workshops, and participate in peer-to-peer skills share sessions.

In this month’s newsletter, we’re highlighting this new training opportunity, and the new courses that will be launching. While certification program participants will have priority access to these courses, there will be an opportunity for you to take standalone offerings too, if space permits (more on that option in the new year).

The first CSCCE Community Manager Certification Program cohort will kick off with orientation activities the week of 17 April 2023. Let us know you plan on enrolling by filling out this short form, or join us on Thursday, 12 January 2023 for an informational drop-in session.

We’re also actively looking for organizations to sponsor the certification program so that we can offer financial aid and make the program more accessible to community managers from a range of organizations and backgrounds. Registration open for Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals

You can now register for the Winter 2023 cohort of our foundational community management training. Scientific Community Engagement Fundamentals is an 8-week all virtual experience designed with new and experienced community managers in mind. It introduces core frameworks, concepts, and vocabulary in community management tailored to the STEM ecosystem. More information about the course structure and topics covered can be found on our website – but be quick as the course is almost full!

New courses

Content Design (CODE)

Creating content that is understandable, actionable, and engaging is a core skill for any community manager. Whether you’re communicating with community members or external audiences, this course will help you plan structured content and create strategic engagement plans that meet your community building needs.

Creating Community Playbooks (PBK)

In this workshop-style course, you will create a playbook for your community with feedback from course instructors and community mentors. Each week you’ll address a particular aspect of building playbooks, investigating case studies and using CSCCE’s playbook framework to inform your work.

Communities of Practice (CoP)

Communities of practice and social learning spaces are unique from other types of communities, and are often misunderstood and mismanaged. This course will address the dynamics of learning in a community context and how to support the creation of knowledge artifacts that capture those learnings for broader dissemination.

Nurturing Online Communities (NOC)

First piloted in 2021, this course takes a theoretical approach to building, moderating, and growing online communities. Learners will work together to creatively solve common challenges in managing communities in a range of virtual settings, and use ideas from the social sciences to inform their strategies.

Digital badges

Digital badges are an increasingly recognized form of digital credential, with a whole range of learning organizations now minting and issuing badges. The digital badge currency is a way for learners to demonstrate the validity of the trainings they list on their resumés, acting a bit like framing a certification or degree on your office wall.

Mini-workshops, skills share sessions, and more

Mini-workshops explore ideas and concepts related to community management that are not covered in the multi-week courses, quarterly skills share sessions are an opportunity for peer learning and connection, and additional assessment and networking activities add depth to this cohort-based program.

We’ll be hosting an informational session at 11am EST / 4pm UTC on Thursday, 12 January 2023 to talk through plans for the certification program and offer some more context around pricing and start dates. If you have any questions, we strongly suggest you try to attend.
