Motivation driven by external rewards or consequences rather than inherent satisfaction from the activity itself. This type of motivation occurs when individuals engage in behaviors primarily to obtain something they want, or to avoid something they don’t want, rather than because they find the activity personally fulfilling or enjoyable.
