Tragedy of the commons

A social dilemma that results in the degradation or collapse of shared digital resources and community quality when individual users act in their own self-interest at the expense of the collective good. This phenomenon adapts Garrett Hardin’s classic economic concept to online environments, where shared community resources can be undervalued, overused, or abused. (Chapter 4, p. 129)*
